The herbal berry extract saw palmetto is made from the fruit of a small palm tree called the American dwarf palm tree. Saw palmetto is a small shrub-like palm tree with “palmately divided leaves”1 and is native to North America.
Saw palmetto is frequently used in Europe to improve the symptoms of enlarged prostate. An enlarged prostate is also referred to as Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy or Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia.
Placebo-controlled studies show that saw palmetto can reduce nocturia, excessive nighttime urination. Men taking saw palmetto are twice as likely to experience improvement in their symptoms then those taking the placebo.
Saw palmetto is also used by over 2 million men in the United States. Even the American Indians used berries of saw palmetto to improve their prostate health.
Over 18 clinical studies show that saw palmetto helps improve urinary function.
Saw palmetto is also called Serenoa repens. According to The Cochrane Database Systematic Review, “Serenoa repens produced similar improvement in urinary symptoms and flow compared to finasteride and is associated with fewer adverse treatment events.”
According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, “The available data indicate that S repens(alone or in combination with other phytotherapeutic agents) improves urinary tract symptoms and urinary tract flow measures. Compared with placebo, S repens improved urinary tract symptoms by 28%, nocturia by 25%, peak urine flow by 24%, mean urine flow by 28%, and residual urine volume by 43%.”
