How sleep affects your body and what you can do to prevent sleep deprivation.
When I was a teenager I probably spent more than half my day sleeping or lying on the sofa napping. Most teens and young adults are like that. Babies, too, of course. They need huge doses of rest and relaxation (between bouts of physical energy and exertion) due to their bodies working overtime to develop and grow. But what about adults? Wasn’t it true that Benjamin Franklin despised sleep and said, “There will be sleeping enough in the grave?” (more…)

The Top Ten Healthiest Foods for Your Heart
When I was a kid I had no concept of food other than what tasted good. I never grasped the concept of eating for health, or that anything I repeatedly put into my body would have consequences, good and bad. And despite being raised by an Italian mother who insisted on veggies and dark leafy greens with all her homemade meals (huh?), I still ran out to McDonald’s every chance I got.
A steady diet of hamburgers and fries lasted only so long. And soon (about the time I had babies) I thought that popping a vitamin would solve all my problems. (more…)

This week’s blog post was put together by our Chief Research Consultant, who, in my opinion, knows everything there is to know about the best supplements for extrem

A good multivitamin (100 percent of the Daily Value (DV) of all the vitamins and minerals) can help supplement the diet and ensure daily vitamin intake as it’s nearly impossible to eat enough fruits, vegetables or whole foods in a normal diet to get the same effect. Be sure your multi has B vitamins, A, C, E, and Folic acid. There are also “whole foods” vitamins, “green” vitamins and heart specific vitamins for special needs. (more…)

Teens need omega-3
I have two sons. And although I have given both of them the same good advice about eating well, they both make different choices now that they’re older. While my one son will go for the fruits and veggies the other inevitably goes for the cookies, cakes, potato chips and pretzels. No amount of coaxing will convince son #2 to pick up son #1’s good habits. And yet, I want both of my children to be healthy and see that eating well now is a huge advantage later in life. I also try to convince them of the importance of good fats and bad fats and how to tell the difference.
Bad: Saturated fats are found in fatty cuts of meat, whole-milk dairy products, lard, and vegetables oils (coconut and palm oil). Saturated fat raises cholesterol (LDL) levels, and while this is a natural and oftentimes unavoidable form of fat, it should be taken in moderation. (more…)
