The encyclopedia of the U.S. National Library of Medicine defines glaucoma as “a group of eye conditions that lead to damage to the optic nerve. This nerve carries visual information from the eye to the brain. In most cases, damage to the optic nerve is due to increased pressure in the eye, also known as intraocular pressure (IOP).”

According to the Glaucoma Research Foundation, “You are at increased risk for glaucoma if your parents or siblings have the disease, if you are African American or Latino, and possibly if you are diabetic or have cardiovascular disease. The risk of glaucoma also increases with age.”

The University of Maryland says, “Eye drops and pills are the most common early treatment for glaucoma. Some cause the eye to produce less fluid, while others lower pressure by helping drain fluid from the eye.”

Treating disease involves assessing the problem: “A clear fluid flows in and out of the space at the front of the eye, nourishing nearby tissues. Glaucoma causes the fluid to pass through too slowly or to stop draining altogether. As the fluid builds up, the pressure inside the eye increases, causing damage to the optic nerve and vision loss.” Therefore, if you have glaucoma, it is so important to have a treatment plan consisting of medications, medical advice and treatment.

The University of Maryland recommends taking one tablespoon (three teaspoons) of fish oil daily. Fish oil is a source of the omega-3 fatty acid EPA—which reduces inflammation—and the omega-3 fatty acid DHA, located in the retina of the eye. Research findings have revealed that reducing inflammation may be the secret to preserving eyesight.

Supplementing the diet with DHA is beneficial for seniors with existing eyesight difficulty and also to maintain eyesight that is already healthy. A new, groundbreaking study suggests that taking the following supplements in conjunction may delay the progression of deteriorating eyesight: vitamins B and E, and DHA. Also, as reported by the Point Institute, “Long-chain omega-3 fatty acids (especially DHA) are highly concentrated within the tissues of the eye. There is increasing evidence that has shown a relationship between these fatty acids and the risk associated with numerous eye diseases (macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa and cataracts).”

Supplements can help seniors with glaucoma restore common nutritional deficiencies. Those with glaucoma tend to have less omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) when compared with people who are healthy. It is difficult to ascertain the cause of their nutritional deficiency. A lack of blood flow to the eye could be part of the problem, while having healthy, clean arteries benefits every part of the body.

Here are some additional health tips:

Avoid or reduce trans-fats from cookies, cakes and crackers and limit processed foods.

Avoid stimulants, alcohol and coffee, and limit red meat consumption.

Omega-6s (present in vegetable oils and fried food) and saturated fats (fatty cuts of beef) promote inflammation that counteracts anti-inflammatory health benefits.

Now, science has uncovered a multitude of healthy plant components called phytochemicals that play an important role in food, nutrition and human health. One type, the carotenoid, is a fat-soluble pigment that gives fruits and vegetables their beautiful color and protects the eyes, cholesterol and cells from oxidative damage.

Keep your eye on the prize:

The macula is an area of the retina (an internal layer of the eye) that promotes central vision and allows us to see what’s directly in front of us. Within the macula is a yellow pigment composed entirely of lutein and zeaxanthin, two fabulous carotenoids that protect the macula from the damaging photo-oxidative effects of sunlight (blue light and also UV rays). When an individual has deficiencies of lutein and zeaxanthin, blindness may occur. And because our bodies do not produce these carotenoids, we must obtain them through diet or supplementation.

Where can I find these carotenoids?

Remember when grandma told you carrots were good for your eyes? She was right.

Lutein and zeaxanthin are found in orange and yellow fruits and veggies, as well as green vegetables like collard greens, spinach, romaine lettuce, kale, broccoli, zucchini, peas and Brussels sprouts.

Healthy artery alert!

Not only does lutein promote healthy eyes, it promotes healthy arteries too. Lutein and astaxanthin are also antioxidants that have been shown to inhibit oxidation of the LDL cholesterol that damages arteries. They promote healthy arteries much like a fire extinguisher puts out a fire—they extinguish singlet oxygen, a harmful oxygen molecule that can cause LDL cholesterol to become oxidized, which may lead to coronary-artery disease or damage to the blood vessels. Low levels of lutein are associated with blocked arteries and higher levels of lutein are not.

Where can I find astaxanthin?

The carotenoid astaxanthin is a red-orange pigment found in sockeye salmon, shrimp, microalgae, trout, shellfish, lobster and crab that gives the seafood its pretty pinkish tint. Wild salmon have a higher content of astaxanthin than farm-raised salmon. This may be because fish eat algae as part of their natural diet. Astaxanthin is an exceptionally potent antioxidant that’s very effective at low doses. Its unique molecular structure offers effective antioxidant performance against various types of free radicals that damage arteries and cells.

Don’t forget lycopene!

Lycopene is another fabulous carotenoid definitely worth mentioning for eye and heart health. It’s what gives the tomato its beautiful red color and has received some recognition by the American Cancer Society for its ability to reduce the risk of certain cancers (i.e. prostate cancer). It is also found in apricots, guava, watermelon, papaya and pink grapefruit. And, worth mentioning, it’s one of those molecules that tend to work just as well processed. That means that—dare I say it—ketchup is also a good source of lycopene. Watch out for all the salt and sugar in ketchup, though, which can obviously counteract the good heart-healthy effects of any vitamin, mineral or antioxidant.

The omega-3 fatty acid DHA is important for the normal process of healthy growth and development of children. DHA is very good for the health of the eyes and the brain of children. According to The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, “The n-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; 22:6n-3) is important for neural and visual function development.”

Res-Q 1250 Liquid provides more omega-3 fatty acids: EPA and DHA, per teaspoon than the majority of omega-3 fish oil supplements sold today and since small children may not swallow capsules, Res-Q 1250 Liquid is convenient, you may mix the oil in with their food.

Since Res-Q 1250 provides more omega-3 per teaspoons, Res-Q 1250 is a better value for your dollar and you save more! Res-Q 1250 is intended to supplement the diet to provide an optimal amount of omega-3 fatty acids to help provide a proper balance of healthy, good fats. Res-Q supplements helps provide optimal brain and eye health.

Multivitamin supplements may not contain any omega-3 all. For example, Flintstones Complete, does not provide any omega-3 fats. Don’t forget this important nutrient! Give your child an additional omega-3 supplement with their vitamins. For more information about Res-Q 1250 Liquid, please call 1-800-26-ALIVE.

Res-Q’s omega-3 supplements provide more omega-3s for less. Safe to take when pregnant and breastfeeding, Res-Q’s omega-3 supplements can be recommended when other supplements cannot. Studies show that omega-3 is so beneficial that the idea of not obtaining omega-3 when pregnant may cause more harm than good.

Due to water pollution, pregnant women cannot obtain enough omega-3 from fish due to concern over heavy metals. The Res-Q omega-3 dietary supplement is a purified, safe form of omega-3. Metals and oxidative impurities are removed through a specialized purification process.

A new study shows more DHA is better. By comparing vision at four months of age, and dividing the infants into multiple groups, a new study sheds light on the subject of just how much omega-3 pregnant women need. Babies fed a higher dose of DHA compared with a lower dose of DHA, had better vision.

Omega-3 fats promote visual development in babies and are a very beneficial supplement for women to take on a regular basis. The study determined that one gram of DHA was better than the typical dose used, which is far less.

How much omega-3s do I need?
Since the optimal amount of omega-3s remains to be established, pregnant and nursing women should consult their doctor for dosage recommendations and for administration to children under one year of age. It is still very important to work closely with your doctor regarding dietary requirements for infants, and make sure that your doctor knows what supplements you take.

According to a population study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, there is a connection between omega-3 consumption and eye health, specifically with regard to risk of developing dry eyes.

Over 32,000 women surveyed, answered a food frequency questionnaire.

Those who had consumed higher intakes of a specific omega-3 fish as frequently as 2-4 times a week, those with a higher intake of omega-3, and those with highest DHA intake were less likely to get dry eye syndrome, compared with lower intake of omega-3 fatty acids.

The diet was assessed, the number of women diagnosed with dry eye syndrome counted, and multiple factors adjusted in order to see if there is relationship between ratios of fatty acids and chances of getting dry eye syndrome.

The results show that those who consumed more omega-6 and less of the omega-3 are more likely to be diagnosed with dry eye syndrome. As reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, “A higher ratio of n–6 to n–3 FA consumption was associated with a significantly increased risk of DES.”

Higher intakes of omega-3 are more common from EPA and DHA, the omega-3 fatty acids but more difficult to obtain than omega-6 since this good omega-3 fat in the beneficial form of EPA and DHA is found in specific fish which may not be as appealing to many. Res-Q 1250 helps restore a healthy balance of omega-3 fats in the diet which helps counter-balance the excess amount of omega-6 in the diet.

Res-Q omega-3 supplements are a direct, concentrated source of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. Many fish oil capsules do not even contain the amount of omega-3 fatty acids as just one Res-Q capsule.

Unlike fish, Res-Q’s omega-3 supplements undergoe purification and testing to ensure safety. The Res-Q 1250 dietary supplement is further analyzed to ensure that the product is safe, unlike the risks associated with eating several fish meals per week.

We do not include omega-6 since it appears easier to obtain omega-6 from diet than it is omega-3. By increasing levels of omega-3, a more optimal, a more healthy ratio of omega 3 to omega 6 may be obtained.
