We may think of yoga as fitness but it’s really an ancient holistic mental and physical discipline that originated in India about 5,000 years ago. The word “yoga” itself is a Sanskrit word having many meanings, such as “to control,” “to unite” or more appropriately, “to contemplate.” And while the exercises now taught at health clubs are only part of the spiritual lifestyle of yoga, they work wonders to purify the body and mind, while giving you all kinds of crazy good health benefits.
In fact, here’s a partial list. Yoga exercises may: keep spinal disks supple, reduce back pain from sitting too long, strengthen bones, maintain joints, boost immune system, increase circulation, teach mind-body control, lower blood pressure, (more…)

Since many of us don’t own a dairy farm or have access to a garden with fresh, clean, nutrient-rich soil for fruits and vegetables, we must depend on other reliable food supplies. For the past 100 years or so, this meant your local grocery store. But now, with better education about food distribution and the harsh reality of processed foods, pesticides and mass production, sometimes the grocery store seems more like an unreliable enemy. And don’t even get me started on fast-food chains! So, what are the healthiest foods on the planet and where can we find them? Below are our picks for best food sources. And our unsolicited advice? Try to buy the bulk of your food from first- and second-place winners. Your body, mind and spirit will thank you! (more…)

I was poised and ready to write a cutesy little blog this morning on how to combat “the blues.” I was going to make suggestions like get out of bed, get a hobby, exercise, eat right, meet new people. And then it hit me like a train. If you’re depressed you can’t do any of those things. Duh.
So…this instead:
Last Friday, on my way to work, I was listening to NPR. The program on Radio Times was called Emerging Treatments in Depression based on the work of Dr. John O’Reardon, Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania and Director of the Treatment-Resistant Depression Clinic. For many of us, the holidays are over and that’s a good thing. From Halloween to New Year’s Day, diet and exercise have no place on my busy schedule, so when they’re over and it’s back to work or school, I am ready for some serious detoxification. Here are six of the biggest changes I make to my diet in the new year:
1. Eat less and start to cut back
Portion sizes during the holidays are, let’s face it, excessive. And while that’s OK on Thanksgiving and a few other stuff-your-face occasions, it’s not OK on the 360 or so days the rest of the year. So lighten up and practice portion control. You cannot do this overnight. Cut back little by little, day by day, until you start to re-adapt to your normal caloric intake. When that happens, then you can begin to cleanse and detox. (more…)

I’m starting to realize the importance of this blog. Any blog is to bring people together—to create a community. And to do that, it’s essential to know who’s in the community in the first place. And since I’m obsessed with food and diet (and sometimes even exercise), I thought it would be fun to share the eating and exercise habits of some of my friends and acquaintances. This week, I’ve interviewed my friend Liz, whom I met in grad school. And aside from being a great writer, she’s more driven than anyone I’ve ever met when it comes to good health, and an inspiration too. If only we could all live up to her standards! (more…)

A wise author and activist once said, “Action may not always bring happiness, but there is no happiness without action.” That may be hard to believe when your whole world has been turned upside down. But as the quote suggests, happiness takes effort. And sometimes, a lot! Not only that, but it’s essential to good health and longer life.
So, this week we’re doing a little of the work for you, by offering up four sites that just might help you regain some of your inner sunshine. (more…)

OK, so not everyone wants to live forever (vampires are constantly complaining about their never-ending lot in life). But I think it’s safe to say that most of us would love to extend our lives or at least guarantee that we will be healthy well into our 80s, 90s, or even 100s.
Is it possible? I believe so. But there is no secret to long life, as some might have you believe. When scouring the Internet, you find ridiculous propositions. An article in the Seattle Times, for example, claims that gene mutations are the key. CNN reports that cold showers will do the trick. And Britain’s oldest virgin, in an article in The Daily Mail claims that a lifetime of no sex is responsible for her long life. Cold showers? No sex? I’m not sure anyone would want to extend his or her life under those conditions. (more…)

Need to heal? Want to relax? Can’t lose those extra 10 pounds? Need to learn how to eat more healthily? These days, there’s a health spa or retreat for everything. I scoured magazines, Spafinder.com and my own treasure trove of amazing health retreats and came up with eight of the most extraordinary destination spas, specifically offering health and wellness treatments along with the usual massages, facials and hair-care services. Most are a little pricey. But making an investment in your health can be priceless. Save your pennies for at least one of these great getaways: (more…)

Every September it’s the same. I’m thrilled when the kids go back to school, but—as a stay-at-home mom (albeit one who works from home)—I tend to feel a little overwhelmed with all the free time I now have. Should I sit on the sofa and watch soap operas all day or shop online? Should I post Facebook updates until my eyeballs burn out, or eat my way through the boredom of waiting for the kids to come home? Believe me, there are a lot of bad choices out there. But, if you get resourceful, I’m sure you’ll feel much better at the end of the day knowing you’ve spent your time wisely. Here are a few of my top boredom terminators. Give them a try! (more…)

A couple of years ago, after a stint of binging daily on McDonald’s, Dunkin’ Donuts and Starbucks, and nearly causing rapid, consecutive deaths to my liver, pancreas and heart (heck, I wasn’t even exercising), I was suddenly possessed by a need to detox my system of junk food and purge. So, I went from one extreme to another. In place of a Big Mac I drank water, tea and soup. Instead of donuts, I ate only salads and raw foods (nuts, berries, veggies and fruits). I did this for about three days straight until I couldn’t take it anymore. Sure, I felt better, but my body (or maybe it was just my brain) was craving sugar and fat. And so the vicious cycle continued until eventually I found some semblance of a “normal” diet. (more…)
