Top vitamins and minerals that can help take the edge off
All stress is not bad. Most temporary stress is based on the body’s ability to send chemical messages to other parts of the body that need to take action. Noticing an accident within a few hundred feet ahead of you, stress chemicals known as cortisol are released and you immediately slam on your brakes. When the threat, or the perceived threat is over, your body works to return to normal. In most cases, this goes off without a hitch.
But sometimes, stress lingers and your body continues to sense a threat, real or imagined. When this happens, the sympathetic nervous system stays chronically stimulated, risking long-term health problems, which can include anything from migraines, anxiety disorders, high blood pressure, depression, heart disease, a compromised immune system, alcoholism, muscle pain, fatigue, insomnia and even death. What the Heck Is Selenium?

Selenium
Selenium is one of those wonderful trace minerals that we acquire inadvertently through our food supply. It’s in the dirt. So, the amount of selenium in the soil, on which animals graze or plants grow, determines how much selenium can be found in foods. It’s also one of those minerals we need, as it helps make many body processes work efficiently and it even increases the effectiveness of antioxidants. Certain areas of the globe however, like New Zealand, Finland, parts of China and Africa, and spots in the United States (the Great Lakes, New England, and parts of the Atlantic Coast and Pacific Northwest) have very low levels of selenium. Pumpkin Extract
More than 70% of type 2 diabetics saw a decrease in their blood sugar after 90 days of taking a pumpkin extract. After seven days, only 20% saw results. Therefore 90 days is the best time frame. They took three capsules at each meal either just prior to, during or immediately afterward, and if the blood sugar at mealtime was higher than 200, additional capsules were consumed. The reduction in blood sugar was about 10-60%.1 (more…)

So the discovery of probiotics—live (good) bacteria such as those found in yogurt—is nothing short of miraculous when you consider that, when ingested, they provide immediate health benefits to your gut and ultimately, your whole body.
The idea behind ingesting live bacteria came from the discovery that increasing beneficial bacteria in the digestive tract could promote longevity by reducing toxins. Study after study proved this to be true and because of them, science has made it easier for us to participate in the health benefits by creating probiotics.

Krill Fish
A while back, there were a handful of scientific journals that quietly reported a “possible decline” in krill, those cute little transparent bottom-feeders that look like shrimp. But no one took much notice. “Krill are one of the world’s most abundant multi-celled animals,” several articles reported.1 And that was all anyone needed to hear. If a species is abundant, then what’s the problem? It wasn’t like the near extinction of the polar bear, the elephant or the panda.
But recently, krill is back in the news and those same scientific journals and a whole lot more are reporting a more sinister scenario: there is now a serious decline in krill and it’s destroying the entire ocean ecosystem as we know it. Not only does their decline directly affect the sea creatures that eat them, like penguins, seals and whales (all populations on decline—or conversely, trying to rebound—that are directly affected by the loss of these little creatures), but it also affects humans. I can’t tell you how many people I meet who proudly tell me they take omega-3s for better health. I pat them on the back and tell them that’s great news! Years of research has shown that the molecules in omega-3s (EPA and DHA) are responsible for enormous health benefits. But then, they mention that they’re taking some cheap, over-the-counter fish oil, to which I frantically reply: that’s defeating the purpose! You simply cannot buy just any fish oil. It would be like buying potato chips for good health as opposed to spinach or an apple.
So, why do people turn to poor quality, over-the-counter fish oil supplements? Two reasons: price and the misbelief that any omega-3 product will work. Here’s some facts to help dispel both myths. (more…)

Someone asked me the other day if our omega-3 softgels are enteric coated. I said no, they are not. He then insisted that the only kind of fish oil he’ll take is enteric coated.
A little later that same day, I went to a business expo in Marlton, NJ, and heard the same devout statement: I only take fish oil capsules if they’re enteric coated.
From a businesswoman’s perspective and from someone who knows a thing or two about high-quality omega-3 marine oil, hearing this made me flinch. What’s more, I was a little frustrated that I didn’t have time to respond to either of these individuals at length about the beauty of not needing enteric coating if you’ve got a good product. As vitamin- and mineral-supplement gurus, we feel compelled to tell you that if there’s one thing with which you should supplement your diet, it’s calcium. What we don’t suggest, however, is that you run out and buy just any bottle or product that says “Calcium” on the label. Here’s a quick primer on calcium carbonate and calcium citrate, and which one might work best for you. (more…)

Vitamin D3 for Bones
What Is Vitamin D?
Vitamin D is acquired by diet, fortified foods, supplements or exposure to sunlight. As reported in the vitamin D fact sheet for health professionals, “Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is naturally present in very few foods, added to others, and available as a dietary supplement. It is also produced endogenously when ultraviolet rays from sunlight strike the skin and trigger vitamin D synthesis.”
What’s So Great about It?
Vitamin D is so great because it is essential for strong bones, for which you need more than just calcium. In fact, studies insist that both vitamin D and calcium are needed to maintain strong bones. Vitamin D is so important that in the 1930s, it was added to milk because children were getting rickets or soft bones from lack of vitamin D. (more…)

As published by the Point Institute, “It is often thought that EPA and DHA have identical benefits in preventing cardiovascular risk, and since commercial products often have higher EPA concentrations, many believe EPA must be of greater benefit.” On the other hand, some people feel that DHA is the better of the two omega-3 fatty acids. DHA is very effective at reducing heart rate and blood pressure, and increasing the LDL particle size (a larger particle size is better for the arteries). Since the 1980s, clinical trials comparing EPA and DHA have emerged. Some studies favored EPA while others favored DHA. Let’s find out what they have in common: (more…)
