If you’ve recently listened to me on the Res-Q HealthLine radio shows, I recently indicated that there were four silent killers. But now, due to expanded research and more and more problems coming through my centers in New York, I have expanded them to eight.

First of all, what is meant by a silent killer? Well, it’s simple. It’s something you don’t feel until a heart attack occurs, or until you fracture a bone, or you have a stroke. These silent killers include:

High blood pressure: Many times you could have a blood pressure of 200 and you don’t feel it.

High cholesterol and triglycerides: There’s typically no pain in the arteries. Unless you get your lipids checked, you’re not going to realize that your arteries are clogging up.

Inflammation: Inflammation is the backbone of pathophysiology for cardiovascular disease and aging, which is very prevalent in Western culture. It can be anything from a swollen toe to inflamed arteries, the latter of which you cannot feel.

Oxidative stress: Damage from free radicals and oxidative stress is when the body’s antioxidant system becomes overwhelmed. Oxidative stress accelerates the aging process.

Blood glucose: Another silent killer is blood glucose. Many people are coming into my office with 200-300 blood-sugar levels. They don’t feel a thing. But they are pre-diabetic or diabetic and they have been doing damage to their bodies for many years before they even realize it. High blood-glucose levels can not only lead to diabetes, but also eye disease, blindness, kidney disease, nerve disease or death.

Glycation: (sometimes called non-enzymatic glycosylation) is something that accelerates heart disease, cellular damage and aging, and it is simply a problem with glucose that adheres to proteins lipids and DNA to create something called “Advanced Glycation End Product” (AGE)

Telomere shortening: Telomeres are the tips of chromosomes and when they shorten you have progressive aging. What happens to accelerate this aging process is inflammation and oxidative stress.

Osteoporosis: Osteoporosis is a bone disease that leads to an increased risk of fracture. It is another silent killer simply because you don’t feel your bones weakening until you’ve lost four inches of height.

What can we do to prevent these silent killers from leading us into cardiovascular disease, heart attack, stroke, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and accelerated aging? Well, I developed a protocol in my Centers based on the following:

Diet: a modified, low-carbohydrate Mediterranean diet

Exercise: Any exercise is good; cross training is the best, which is when you do a combination of resistance training with aerobics.

Stress reduction: Stress reduction is critical. It’s one of the leading factors that influence degenerative diseases and especially cardiovascular disease.

Supplements: The right supplements can combat high triglycerides, high cholesterol, high blood pressure oxidative damage, high blood sugar, arthritis, weight reduction, diabetes, fatigue, and basically all of the degenerative and cardiovascular problems.

Pharmaceuticals: Medical drugs are prescribed when necessary.

Prevention Through Supplements & Nutrition
Years ago, I developed a program called Cardio Nutrition, and that is simply a program, along with diet and exercise, in which we use supplements. Here’s a list of some of the “silent killers” and what Res-Q products will work best to combat them.

High Cholesterol/Triglycerides:

L-D-L less (red yeast rice)

Res-Q LDLx2 (polycosanol) with or without niacin

Res-Q 1250, which is primarily a triglyceride-lowering agent

Res-Q Land ’n’ Sea Fiber is excellent for lowering lipids

Res-Q Multi, as it has 300 milligrams of garlic

Res-Q HDL+ (raises your good cholesterol)

When it comes to cholesterol we also worry about the oxidative damage and we have a number of antioxidants including Res-Q Multi, Res-Q CellPower (CoQ10), Res-Q Resveratrol, Nature’s Shield Superfoods and Nature’s Shield Leg & Vein Support, which all protect the LDL against oxidative damage.

Hypertension/ High Blood Pressure:

Res-Q Multi vitamin, which has taurine, hawthorn berry, garlic and L-carnitine

And I believed her. It gave me the perfect excuse to eat cheesesteak hoagies, meatball Parmesan sandwiches, and huge servings of turkey, side dishes, pies and cookies during the holidays. But I don’t believe her anymore. I imagine my great-great-to-the-25th-power great grandmother—who was being dragged around by the hair on her head and living in a cave—had a physiological reason to put on extra weight during the winter months. Like animals, our ancestors probably also needed to store enough fat to get them through the cold, dark months when food and warmth were scarce. But today, we have supermarkets, freezers for storing food long-term, home heating systems and fleece blankets galore. We even have tanning beds, treadmills and light therapy lamps. There’s simply no need for extra fat on the human body during winter or any other season.

That, however, does not change the fact that nearly all Americans gain weight during the winter. According to the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), “Americans gain an average of 0.4 to 1.8 pounds each year during their adult lives,” most of which is gained during the holidays. For example, when a study of weight gain during the winter months was conducted, research showed that “volunteers gained just over a pound (1.05 lb) by late February or early March. Most of that weight gain (0.8 lb) occurred during the six-week interval between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day.”

One pound doesn’t seem like a big deal, but year after year it adds up. Next thing you know, you’re 10 pounds heavier at the end of a decade and it’s hard as heck to lose.

So, before the holidays are upon us, I thought I’d get this list together of preventive measures you can take to assure that that one pound, or more, stays off:

Change your paradigm about food and celebration. Although food is an integral part of almost any festive occasion, and should be enjoyed to the fullest, there’s a difference between enjoying food and gluttonous self-indulgence. Take your time at the dinner table. Put smaller portions on your plate. Eat slowly and taste the food. What’s the hurry? The night is meant to be enjoyed by family and friends, and to last.

Be grateful for the abundance, but acknowledge that many people in the world are hungry. Like it or not, guilt is a great motivator when it comes to changing our behavior. “The average American will consume more than 4,500 calories and 229 grams of fat on Thanksgiving Day alone,” according to the Caloric Control Council. Don’t be one of them. Celebrations around the world tend to be more modest, celebrating food as a delicacy rather than something to be consumed in one sitting. Who’s to say you can’t start thinking a little more modestly? Food is a gift. We need to honor it, appreciate it and use it wisely.

Maintain your routine. Why stop exercising, walking, running or working out just because it’s cold outside? The more you maintain your workout schedule through the holidays, the easier it is. So many of us stop exercising only to experience great difficulty getting back into it later.

Don’t forget about the leftovers. What you don’t eat today can be saved for tomorrow. This spreads the calories you consume over two, three or four days. Heck, in my family, we were eating turkey leftovers well into December.

Practice self-restraint. At some point in our 230-year-old history we tossed self-restraint out the window. Self-help gurus, hotel-spa moguls and Baskin-Robbins told us indulgence was good, and now look at the mess we’re in. According to an article in the New York Times, “Nearly 34 percent of adults are obese, more than double the percentage 30 years ago [and]… obese children tripled during that time, to 17 percent.” When you’re about to go back for seconds, stop yourself. Wait between servings. Sip water or tea. Give your system time to digest. Remember there’s still dessert on the way.

Be conscious. So often we consume without thinking. Be conscious of what you put on your plate, how you eat, and what that inner voice is telling you about food. Even though you may be emotionally craving more food, logically and physically you’re most likely full. Pacify that little inner voice begging for more with something reasonable, but don’t give him or

Monday: I had one Reese’s, one Nestlé Crunch bar, two Snickers and two bags of peanut M&Ms.

Tuesday: I had the same thing, but in varying order.

Wednesday: the same, except that I had eaten all the Snickers the day before so I had a Kit Kat instead.

Today (Thursday), as I write this blog, I realize I’m out of control and something must be done. I am mulling over the idea of secretly tossing all the candy into the trash, explaining to the kids that squirrels got to it. Anything to save myself.

The thing with snacking is that it tends to make me do awful things: lie to my kids, lie to myself, hide snacks, falsify information. I have even snuck out to the local convenience store, unbeknownst to my family and friends, bought a couple of candy bars and devoured them behind closed doors, only to feel the guilt and shame later on down the road from all those empty, wasted calories.

There’s got to be a better way. Excessive snacking on fats, salts and sweets causes weight gain, health issues and loss of energy. And if you’re anything like me, too much sugar, fat or stimulants (from chocolate, for example) will start to completely upset your digestive balance, give you headaches or leave you feeling angry and restless if you don’t get your next fix.

At the heart of the snacking quandary is that snacks are ubiquitous. Everywhere you go, there is the availability of bite-sized portions of fun food. The pharmacy, for example. Why would we need to buy a box of Little Debbie snack cakes at check out? Even some chain clothing stores are selling designer candies and chocolates to nibble on while you shop. For kids, it’s even worse. There are snacks given out after every soccer game, snack-time at school before lunch, snacks at classroom parties, snacks during birthday parties, after-school snacks, after-dinner snacks… It’s endless. And that’s not even considering the amount of messages and advertising we are bombarded with daily, subliminally luring us to the candy aisle.

The availability of junk-food snacks probably won’t go away anytime soon, but we can certainly change the way we feed into the culture of snacking. We can remember that our bodies are temples. What we put into them should honor and care for us, not break us down and function inefficiently. We can make better choices. We can say no. And we can stop using food and snacking as a way to pass the time, dodge the blues or make us feel complete.

These are all messages to myself, really. I’m as guilty as anyone for being a sucker for junk. But as I’d like to believe, moving in a healthier direction is more about progress than perfection. So, for my sake, and hopefully others’, I’m posting a few links for healthy snacking versus junk-food snacks. Choose wisely!

Because diabetics have to watch their blood-sugar levels, Reader’s Digest has a great article on best snacks for diabetics.

Parents magazine has a little slide show of the 20 best snacks for kids.

Are you a late-night snacker? Divine Caroline has a solution for healthier late-night snacks, and lists some pretty ugly ones too.

Women Fitness magazine lists some pretty delicious snacks. But watch out. These are geared toward people who generally work out and exercise a lot. I wouldn’t suggest a bagel as a snack unless you need to replenish your carbs after a tough workout.

This is, by far, the most innovative list of healthy snacks: Family Education suggests lots of fruit smoothies, but they really need to get rid of all their online ads.

Fitness magazine lists the worst and best vending-machine snacks.

Lastly, watch WebMD’s fact-filled video on snacking for more low-cal snacking options.

I used to think it took a lifetime (maybe 50 years or so?) of eating pizza, burgers, fries, chips, cookies and cake to create the swamp of dysfunction and imbalance inside the body known as diabetes. But having read multiple articles a few years back on childhood obesity and the rate of diabetes among the young, I was shocked to know that it really only takes a few years of bad eating to bring your body to the point of failure. Because of this, I espoused a rather militant aversion to anything greasy, fried, fat or overly sugary (eating at KFC or snacking on Halloween candy ad nauseam is something you’ll never see me do).

And yet, I still battle constantly with the need to wolf down a side of fries. I still love a good burger every now and then. And there’s always the dreaded brownie sundae, which I can’t resist once or twice a year.

But my battle with food is based on knowing food and not being misled by what it claims to be.

Diseases like diabetes are becoming so prevalent because of the obvious. Junk is everywhere. In an article in the New York Times, “Is Candy Evil or Just Misunderstood,” author Julia Moskin writes that, despite the fact that there is the amount of sugar of a dozen candy corns in Gatorade, people think this “sports” drink is good for you. She also noted that although “candy provides only 6 percent of the added sugar in the American diet… sweet drinks and juice supply 46 percent.” There’s obviously something wrong when a granola bar with chocolate chips is marketed as a health food while a chocolate-chip cookie is marketed as nothing but a sugary cookie; yet the two are virtually the same.

A large part of avoiding diabetes or, for some of you, fighting it, is getting real about food. The alluringly packaged bag of “baked” potato chips, which claims to be healthier for you, may still be an over-processed bag of chips with oils, modified starches, and sometimes even salt and sugar. “Smart food” isn’t all that smart. And “Made from the juice of real fruit” is, well, probably a juice drink so loaded with sugar that you would probably need to eat three bags of jelly beans to equal the sugar in the juice.

Read labels. Stick to homemade foods. Eat more raw, organic foods—salad greens, carrots, beets, broccoli, cabbage, cucumbers, apples, oranges, bananas, grapes and blueberries. Most importantly, don’t be fooled by marketing. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Look, I admit. I will never be able to completely avoid junk food. Despite almost zero nutritional value, nothing beats a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup (or two). But, as long as I make my indulgences sacred and minimal, and the bulk of what I eat healthy, I’m doing good.

November is Diabetes Awareness Month. In recognition, here are some facts:

Facts About Pre-Diabetes (Borderline Diabetics)

57 million people in the United States have pre-diabetes, defined as “blood glucose levels that are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes.”

According to statistics from the 2007 National Diabetes Fact Sheet, 5.7 million people are undiagnosed. This means that they have diabetes and don’t even know it.

Everyone should ask for these three blood-sugar tests: the A1C, fasting blood-sugar and oral-glucose tolerance.

If your fasting blood-sugar number is not less then 100, face the fact that you are diabetic or pre-diabetic and start making some lifestyle modifications such as weight loss, eating healthier and becoming more active.

In fact, as published in Diabetes Metabolism, “Intensive lifestyle changes were even more effective than [diabetic drugs] in preventing diabetes.”

One of the best publications I’ve found on diabetes, which includes great recipes, exercise plans and other weight-loss tips, is Prevention Magazine’s “Outsmart Diabetes” guide. I found my copy at the grocer’s checkout.

I know… easier said than done. I’ve been on a diet for a little over three months and have lost 11 pounds. But I have four more to go. Four little pounds. And it seems like it’s taking forever. I believe I’ve hit the dreaded plateau.

If you find yourself struggling to get rid of those last few pounds, or if you’re at the beginning of losing 20, 30, 40, even 100 pounds, don’t fret. There are ways to cope and actually enjoy your new adventure.

It’s not a diet: The word “diet” conjures up loss. It makes people think of little to no food, or eating lettuce all day. Change your perspective on what you’re undertaking. Even if it is a diet (shhhh… I won’t tell!), trick your brain into believing that you are embarking on a new “lifestyle.” Dieting, then, doesn’t so much become the loss of food, but rather, the addition of new and different foods, possibly new clothing and a new and exciting routine. Embrace the change through positive self-talk (“I am worth this new lifestyle!”) and see how much better you adapt. Also, research foods, explore culinary options and try things you’ve never tried before (ever chop up a yucca and add it to your soup?). Remember to think of this as an adventure or lifestyle change, rather than just another boring diet.

Don’t starve yourself: You’ve heard it before. I’m not the first to mention it. When you starve, you do yourself a huge disservice, not only physically but mentally and emotionally. Starving yourself is the opposite extreme of over-eating. That kind of behavior is not healthy either. There needs to be balance, which may simply mean eating the right portion sizes and making healthier choices while adding treats here and there.

Drink plenty of water: Water is the be-all and end-all of our existence on this planet (except maybe air). The human body is anywhere from 55% to 78% water, depending on body mass. And because we lose so much water per day (due to exercise, sweating, urination, etc.) we need to replenish. Water helps to maintain muscle tone, digestion and even body weight. And aside from just being plain ol’ healthy for you, water fills you up. Drink a glass of water before each meal and you’ll find it a little more difficult to finish. Water should also replace most if not all other diet drinks, soft drinks, milks and juices, which add sugar or excess calories to your daily intake. Drink to hydrate. Don’t waste calories on guzzling high fructose corn syrup. Ick!

Pamper yourself: Changing the way you interact with food can be, for some, incredibly stressful. Let’s face it; food is comfort for many of us. When you take away the comfort of snacking or overindulging, you need to—at least temporarily—replace it with something healthy. If you can afford it, head to the spa at least once a week during the first several weeks of your new eating plan. Take a yoga class, a hot bubble bath or a long drive through the country. What makes you happy? Know what triggers a craving or need for food and replace it with a healthy alternative.

Keep your eye on the prize: Self-talk is important when trying to lose weight. It’s kept the weight on and allowed us to make bad choices; it can equally take the weight off and allow us to make healthier choices. Our brains are tools. Just like a hammer, it can either create something or destroy it. And your ability to convince your brain to stick to something that might be somewhat unpleasant is the key to your success. But remember, you have a choice in everything you think or do. You can choose negative self-talk (“I’m too far gone; I’ll never reach my goal weight”), or you can choose to be positive (“I’m worth the effort; I need to get real with my life and health; I deserve to live a better life; I can do this!”). They are opposite sides of the same coin. You just need to keep your eye on the prize and recognize how much power and control over your own life that you have. When we are able to recognize our ability to take control of weight and food choices, and when we build self-esteem and recognize our worth, how can we do anything but make healthy choices?

Coming up next week: Take it to heart: the top five vitamin or mineral supplements you can’t live without, to prevent heart disease.

We’ve been spending a lot of time this month talking about Res-Q Trim System and all its great benefits for weight loss.

But, today, I’d like to focus on “green tea leaf extract,” which has always been an integral ingredient in Res-Q Trim System, and which is studied extensively for its weight-loss abilities.

Green tea leaf extract is an all-natural ingredient that provides weight loss benefits in three ways. Let’s take a look.

Green tea has the ability to slow the absorption of sugar from the digestive tract. This encourages weight loss, and more importantly, reduces blood sugar spikes, insulin secretion, and allows the body to make better use of raw “energy.”

Additionally, green tea promotes calorie-burning and body-fat reduction, two additional weight-loss benefits. Studies suggest that the combination of polyphenols that are unique to green tea–not just any kind of tea work together producing a synergistic effect on fat oxidation and weight loss. By supporting the metabolism, green tea promotes the breakdown of body fat and an increase in the rate at which calories are burned for energy.

What’s unique about Res-Q Trim System is that, despite the power of green tea, our product is not just a green tea leaf extract product. Green tea leaf alone is great for weight loss.

But, Res-Q Trim System has fourteen other all-natural, wonderful weight-loss ingredients that work together to maximize your results. Imagine what you could look like after two weeks of taking this product!

Res-Q Trim System, a weight-loss system that provides multiple, high-quality ingredients for safe weight loss, is designed to help keep you trim and provide optimal weight-loss benefits including appetite support, calorie-burning, and body-fat reduction. One of the ways it does this is through the power of Forslean, a key ingredient in Res-Q Trim System and an ancient ayurvedic herbal extract prepared from the roots of the plant Coleus forskohlii, known for its miracle ability to promote lean body-mass.

How it works: Forslean naturally encourages a chemical process in the body, which results in burning energy and promotes the release of fatty acids from the fat cells of the body fat. The released fat is then used to produce energy. This, in turn, promotes weight-loss, body-fat reduction, and lean body-mass. Forslean is also known to increase thyroid activity, which ultimately increases your metabolism.

Unlike harsh stimulants, Forslean also directly activates body-fat loss without hormonal stimulation. Studies show that people taking Forslean don’t experience any adverse changes in blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, liver or kidney function, making weight-loss a lot safer!

Remember to exercise, eat right and follow the Res-Q Trim System guidelines in order to experience maximum weight loss benefits.

And always consult a physician prior to starting a new weight-loss regimen.

We’d like to hear form you.

Because weight loss is a top priority for so many of us, we’d like to devote a week or two in January to helping you get started on your weight-loss goals. For starters, what are your goals?

If you don’t have a clear idea of how you’d like to lose weight or how much, it will be a little more difficult to get started.

Sometimes starting a weight-loss plan is as easy as answering a few questions:

1. What is my goal weight?

2. How much would I like to lose?

3. When would I realistically like to reach my goal weight?

4. Is there a specific date in the future that will motivate me to reach my goal (a wedding, a vacation, a birthday)?

5. How do I plan to lose weight—will I eat less, exercise more, join a weight-loss program, add a weight-loss supplement to my plan?

Once you answer those questions, get more specific with your list. Put a date on the calendar to begin your weight-loss plan and put a date on the calendar that you’d like to reach your goal weight. How long will it take you? A few weeks? Three months? Six months?

From there, research healthy meals. Make a daily menu plan based on healthy eating. Tip: Res-Q Trim System includes an easy menu plan to help you get started! And write out an exercise plan. For example, promise to exercise twenty minutes daily, or do cardio three times a week for 30-50 minutes, while adding some weight-training to your routine for muscle building.

Also, research the safety and efficacy of “diet pills” if you plan to add them to your strategy. Many over-the-counter diet pills are unnatural, chemical-based products that are loaded with laxatives, caffeine, diuretics and toxic stimulants capable of causing serious side effects.

Res-Q Trim System is a weight-loss system that contains two supplements, a diet plan and fifteen of the best weight-loss ingredients that have been proven in clinical studies to burn fat and help you lose weight quicker.

For your research, here’s a full list of the all-natural ingredients found in Res-Q Trim System: calcium, magnesium, zinc, chromium, vanadium, beta-glucans, cinnamon bark extract, banaba leaf extract, green tea leaf extract, Phaseolamin, citrus aurantium extract, Hoodia gordonii extract, grapefruit extract, Forslean and Super Citrimax.

Finally, share your weight-loss goals with us. Post a comment here or email us! Sometimes when you share your weight-loss goals with others, it inspires you to follow through with them.

And, as always, call a Res-Q consultant at 800-26-ALIVE if you have any questions or concerns about weight-loss or, simply, if you’d like to know about our Res-Q products.

Happy New Year!

It is a well-known fact that weight loss will occur when you increase energy expenditure and decrease energy intake. It does not matter whose diet plan you follow. How weight-loss really happens is a science—not a secret.

Weight loss happens when you expend or burn more energy than you consume; burn more calories, lose more weight. It’s that simple.

The most effective way to increase energy expenditure is to exercise. When walking, running, or performing physical activity, the body naturally utilizes more calories. Another way to increase energy expenditure is to take Res-Q Trim System, a fantastic weight-loss system.

Designed with uniquely powerful fat-burning ingredients, Res-Q Trim System promotes an increase in the body’s normal, resting metabolic-rate, the rate at which calories are burned for energy during rest. This increases the amount of calories that can be burned for energy, which ultimately helps you lose weight.

For starters, we’ve added green tea leaf extract. Studied for its weight-loss properties and reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, it has been shown to increase energy expenditure, thereby promoting an increase in the metabolic rate.

We also include the best all-natural extracts from the following fruits and herbs: Super Citrimax, Forslean and Citrus aurantium. The aforementioned ingredients all work together to support the body’s metabolic rate. By increasing how many calories can be burned, Res-Q Trim System can help you lose weight faster than diet and exercise alone.

Res-Q Trim System also contains fourteen other carefully selected, all-natural ingredients for additional weight-loss benefits: reduced carbohydrate absorption, blood-sugar metabolism and appetite support.

Res-Q Trim System comes conveniently in a kit, which includes two dietary supplements as well as a mini booklet filled with dietary guidelines and meal suggestions. Remember, there is no “secret” to weight loss. However, there is support to help you lose weight quicker and more efficiently. Ask a Res-Q consultant about Res-Q Trim System and start losing weight today!

Findings from the new study were presented at The Endocrine Society’s Annual Meeting in June, 2009, in Washington D.C.

Intake of Vitamin D may be important if you are overweight. Low levels of circulating Vitamin D are observed in obesity. The reason for the low levels of circulating Vitamin D could be partly due to accumulation of Vitamin D inside fat cells. Furthermore, Vitamin D may promote a healthy body by slowing fat cell growth.

Vitamin intake may be important when dieting. When dieting, caloric intake is drastically reduced which can consequently result in reduced vitamin intake and increased risk of vitamin deficiencies.
Res-Q Multi, our heart-health multivitamin, is intended to supplement the diet. Res-Q Multi provides a full spectrum of vitamins, minerals, and additional heart-health ingredients.

The Vitamin D found in Res-Q Multi is in the form of Vitamin D3, called cholecalciferol, the more biologically active, natural form of Vitamin D. Vitamin D3 is preferred due to its efficient ability to raise blood levels of Vitamin D.
