The Top Five Ways to Live Longer

#1. Relax!

  • Stress is the number-one road hazard on life’s journey. But not necessarily major stressors like losing a loved one, getting divorced or being diagnosed with cancer. Although these events can have a major impact on your mind, body and soul, they are often temporary stressors and do not cause long-term damage. It’s the smaller, perpetual stresses that an individual undergoes that may cut back years of life. In fact, long-term stress can lead to diabetes, heart problems, high blood pressure and susceptibility to infection. And according to an article on CBS Online, “Research suggested that people with positive emotions may live longer and healthier lives.” So, if you find yourself stressed out and cranky more days than not, it’s time to start de-stressing. Meditation, yoga, music therapy, being with people you love, relaxation and even a visit to a wellness spa may all take the edge off and help boost your lifespan! (more…)

Resveratrol May Help Memory Association with Aging

Research studies show that resveratrol helps protect the brain.  However, a new study was just conducted to learn more about how resveratrol helps the brain.

According to Environmental Health News, “Results from a newly published laboratory study show the compound may slow the development of protein clumps – called amyloid fibrils. The fibrils – made of beta-amyloid protein – ultimately aggregate into the distinctive plaques commonly found in Alzheimer’s patients.”

It is resveratrol that has been shown in a recent study to play a unique role in maintaining the structure and function of the brain. Res-Q Resveratrol, a high quality resveratrol supplement can be purchased by calling 1-800-26-ALIVE.

According to a recent article in the medical journal Endocrine, “An extract from the bark of Pygeum africanum has been used in Europe as a prevention and treatment of prostate disorders including benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH).”

The European interest in the all-natural bark of the African plum tree called Pygeum africanum, or Prunus africana, dates back to the 18th century when travelers from Europe acquired knowledge from South Africa regarding the benefits of pygeum bark for the urinary health of older men.

The urinary problems associated with the natural process of aging common to most men, was once referred to as “old man’s disease.” Due to the aging process, the prostate can continually grow larger which can interfere with a normal urinary function.  In fact, 90% of men 80 years and older have some degree of prostate enlargement.  Men over age 40 are also at risk.

Interest in the use of pygeum bark and saw palmetto for prostate health has extended to the United States.   (more…)

Res-Q Multi

A study was conducted to see if multivitamin supplements have an effect on telomere length. Telomeres are caps that protect chromosomes. Telomeres indicate age.  With age, new cells end up with shorter telomeres.  Shorter telomeres are associated with aging and growing older while longer ones are associated with longevity. The result of the study: women that took vitamins supplements had longer telomeres.  (more…)

Resveratrol: Is it the new Anti-Aging Supplement?

Monday, April 13th, 2009

Resveratrol, an antioxidant phytochemical found in red wine and the skins of red grapes, is getting a lot of attention lately as the new good-health supplement.

Resveratrol encourages living longer by activating the SIRT1 gene. Activating the SIRT1 gene produces the same beneficial anti-aging effects that cutting calories does.

Red wine gets so much attention for cardiovascular health, ever since the one-glass-per-day rule came out. Since then, researchers have been studying resveratrol, naturally occuring in red wine and red grape skins, to learn more about it. However, the red-wine (grape-skin) extract supplements provide the health benefits of resveratrol without the side effects of the alcohol.

Antioxidants and Living Longer!

Smoking increases risk of Alzheimer’s disease
Antioxidants can help us live longer. Everyone can benefit from antioxidants, but if you are a smoker, it may be even more important to take antioxidants. It was recently reported that older adults who smoke have an increased risk of getting Alzheimer’s disease. Of course, quitting smoking would be the best thing to do.

Free radicals harm the brain
Clinical studies on Alzheimer’s disease show a connection between free radicals and Alzheimer’s disease. Free radicals, which are by-products of normal bodily processes, can be harmful in excess quantities. Free radicals can be triggered by pollution and smoking.

Smoking triggers excess free-radical production.
Free radicals attack cells. The attacked cells attack more cells causing a chain reaction of damage to the body. This happens because free radicals are missing an electron and steal electrons from other atoms, then those atoms are missing electrons. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals by lending an electron or by otherwise stabilizing the free radicals so the free radical does not harm the body.

Modern diets lack antioxidants
Diets lacking sufficient fruits and vegetables may lack antioxidants. Supplementing the diet with antioxidants can benefit health and increase longevity. Studies show that using multiple antioxidants works better than using just one antioxidant. Studies show that antioxidants can help maintain a healthy brain.

Res-Q Resveratrol: Live Longer

Resveratrol was discussed on ABC’s Barbara Walter’s special on anti-aging. Clinical studies show that resveratrol, a natural component of red grape skins, helps regulate the aging process, by a gene called SIRT1 also found in humans.

Have we now found some solutions on how to live longer and stay healthier longer?

The TV show implied that resveratrol may encourage being healthier and living longer. Mice given resveratrol, “lived 30% longer,” did not get ill, and despite being on a high fat diet, lived like a healthy mouse and did not get heart disease.
