Yes, yes, we know It’s “Go red” for heart health. But as our guest blogger Fran Davis points out, green smoothies do amazing things for your ticker, not to mention darn near every other part of your body. You can’t go wrong with one of these tasty smoothies. Try them and let us know what you think! And here’s a helpful health tip: Fran uses flax in her smoothies. Plant-derived flax yields alpha-linolenic acid or ALA, unlike a marine-derived fish oil, which yields both EPA and DHA, a more potent omega-3. Make sure you take your marine-based EPA and DHA for maximum heart-healthy benefits.

Are you looking for fast, simple and delicious ways to improve your diet? Look no further than the green smoothie! Green smoothies pack a nutritional punch and offer an impressive array of benefits.

1. Great source of antioxidants
Free radicals are atoms or molecules that form in our bodies and can damage cells. Free radicals may play a role in heart disease and cancer. While free radicals can be created due to normal chemical changes occurring in a cell, they can also be increased by external forces like smoking, radiation, and pollution. Antioxidants, found in berries and vegetables contained in green smoothies, can aid in the reduction of free radicals.

2. Easy to prepare
Oftentimes, getting our recommended servings of fruits and vegetables and proper vitamins and nutrients can be difficult and time-consuming. However, creating a green smoothie for breakfast couldn’t be faster. Within minutes, you can blend up a full serving of fruits and vegetables that can be savored at home or put into a travel mug to enjoy while commuting to work.

3. Vegetables even your kids will love
Those of us with small children know how challenging it can be to find ways of preparing vegetables the whole family will eat. While green smoothies do contain those green leafy vegetables kids tend to avoid, the combination of these greens with yummy fruits like strawberries, mangoes and bananas result in a sweet treat the kids won’t complain about.

5. Filling meal that leads to increased energy and weight loss
Sounds too good to be true, right? As odd as it may sound, green smoothies leave you with a satisfied feeling and because they are made from low calorie, low carb, high nutrient ingredients they have been found to promote weight loss and give you an increased boost of energy.

Here are two “green” recipe to try today…

Cinnamon “Get Figgy With It” Smoothie

Makes 2 large glasses

1 cup sweetened almond milk
2 generous handfuls of baby spinach
1/2 frozen banana (or 1/2 fresh banana with a few ice cubes)
2-3 mission figs cut up
1 tablespoon ground flax seed
A generous sprinkling of cinnamon

Add the ingredients to a blender in the order listed above and blend until well incorporated.

Mango Strawberry Smoothie

Makes 2 large glasses

1 cup sweetened almond milk
2 generous handfuls of baby spinach
4 strawberries cut up
1 mango peeled and diced
1 tablespoon ground flax seed

Add the ingredients to a blender in the order listed above and blend until well incorporated.

Now, science has uncovered a multitude of healthy plant components called phytochemicals that play an important role in food, nutrition and human health. One type, the carotenoid, is a fat-soluble pigment that gives fruits and vegetables their beautiful color and protects the eyes, cholesterol and cells from oxidative damage.

Keep your eye on the prize:

The macula is an area of the retina (an internal layer of the eye) that promotes central vision and allows us to see what’s directly in front of us. Within the macula is a yellow pigment composed entirely of lutein and zeaxanthin, two fabulous carotenoids that protect the macula from the damaging photo-oxidative effects of sunlight (blue light and also UV rays). When an individual has deficiencies of lutein and zeaxanthin, blindness may occur. And because our bodies do not produce these carotenoids, we must obtain them through diet or supplementation.

Where can I find these carotenoids?

Remember when grandma told you carrots were good for your eyes? She was right.

Lutein and zeaxanthin are found in orange and yellow fruits and veggies, as well as green vegetables like collard greens, spinach, romaine lettuce, kale, broccoli, zucchini, peas and Brussels sprouts.

Healthy artery alert!

Not only does lutein promote healthy eyes, it promotes healthy arteries too. Lutein and astaxanthin are also antioxidants that have been shown to inhibit oxidation of the LDL cholesterol that damages arteries. They promote healthy arteries much like a fire extinguisher puts out a fire—they extinguish singlet oxygen, a harmful oxygen molecule that can cause LDL cholesterol to become oxidized, which may lead to coronary-artery disease or damage to the blood vessels. Low levels of lutein are associated with blocked arteries and higher levels of lutein are not.

Where can I find astaxanthin?

The carotenoid astaxanthin is a red-orange pigment found in sockeye salmon, shrimp, microalgae, trout, shellfish, lobster and crab that gives the seafood its pretty pinkish tint. Wild salmon have a higher content of astaxanthin than farm-raised salmon. This may be because fish eat algae as part of their natural diet. Astaxanthin is an exceptionally potent antioxidant that’s very effective at low doses. Its unique molecular structure offers effective antioxidant performance against various types of free radicals that damage arteries and cells.

Don’t forget lycopene!

Lycopene is another fabulous carotenoid definitely worth mentioning for eye and heart health. It’s what gives the tomato its beautiful red color and has received some recognition by the American Cancer Society for its ability to reduce the risk of certain cancers (i.e. prostate cancer). It is also found in apricots, guava, watermelon, papaya and pink grapefruit. And, worth mentioning, it’s one of those molecules that tend to work just as well processed. That means that—dare I say it—ketchup is also a good source of lycopene. Watch out for all the salt and sugar in ketchup, though, which can obviously counteract the good heart-healthy effects of any vitamin, mineral or antioxidant.

We can’t tell you that we have the secret to fighting cancer, but we can tell you the top-10 foods that have a pretty good reputation for doing the job. Oh, and by the way, these foods are also a great source phytonutrients, which might help prevent certain diseases and cancers.

Here are 10 superfoods to help you live longer!

1. Tomatoes
Tomatoes contain lycopene, a red pigment (carotenoid) that gives the tomato its color. Cooked tomatoes are a great source of lycopene, an antioxidant that neutralizes cancer-causing free radicals. In the book, Food: Your Miracle Medicine, a great resource on cancer-fighting foods, research found that lycopene was “twice as powerful as beta-carotene at ‘quenching singlet oxygen’—a rampaging toxic oxygen molecule that can trigger cancer in cells.” But a word of caution, you won’t get a lot of lycopene from a ketchup bottle. If you can, choose to eat the real thing.

2. Broccoli
Broccoli, a superfood rich in antioxidants, may decrease the risk of colon, stomach or breast cancer by helping produce enzymes that fight free radicals and carcinogens. Broccoli contains the phytochemical indole-3 carbinol, which blocks estrogen-binding and glucoraphanin, which may decrease the risk of getting stomach cancer, the second most common form of cancer.

3. Red Grapes
Red wine will never make this list! Alcohol is linked with several cancers and can make existing cancer worse. It’s not considered cancer-fighting. But, interestingly enough, red wine is made from red grapes that are very healthy. Red grapes, in fact, contain resveratrol, a phytochemical with anti-aging and cardiovascular health benefits that was described in a recent article as “an effective antioxidant that protects against free radical damage that is linked to many types of diseases.” In another article, resveratrol is reported to “slow the growth of cancer cells and inhibit the formation of tumors in lymph, liver, stomach and breast cells. Resveratrol has also triggered the death of leukemic and colon cancer tumors.”

4. Green Leafy Vegetables, Kale and Spinach
Dark green leafy vegetables have lutein, an antioxidant that has been studied for cancer. Lutein belongs to a class of phytochemicals called carotenoids. According to the Bastyr Center for Natural Health, “Carotenoids, also called carotenes, are the naturally occurring nutrients found in brightly colored vegetables and fruit, and are believed to have cancer-preventive properties. These are the nutrients that give vegetables and fruit their bright orange, green, red and yellow pigments.” Spinach is good, but kale has even more lutein in it. Generally speaking, raw-vegetable salads are great but cooked spinach is also great because the fat-soluble carotenoid lutein is not destroyed with cooking.

5. Garlic
Garlic may just be one of the most healthiest foods. It contains many different beneficial phytochemicals. In fact, the American Institute for Cancer Research says, “In laboratory studies, components of garlic have shown the ability to slow or stop the growth of tumors in prostate, bladder, colon and stomach tissue.”

6. Green Tea
Green tea is highly recommended for cancer prevention due to the great phytochemicals. Green tea, the real stuff: pure green tea found in the Asian markets contains catechins, a type of flavonoid. EGCG is a type of catechin with remarkable anti-cancer effects.

7. Mushrooms
According to the Cancer Cure Foundation, “There are a number of mushrooms that appear to help the body fight cancer and build the immune system.” The Agaricus blazei Murrill mushroom from Brazil—also known as “the mushroom of God”1—is supposed to be the best. If you can’t get your hands on one of those, shiitake mushrooms are also supposed to be cancer-fighting.

8. Fruits
Kalli Castille, Director of Nutrition at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America, recommends that cancer patients should eat a variety of fruits and vegetables; 30% of all cancers could be prevented with the right diet. Açai, pomegranate, raspberries, blueberries and citrus fruits like oranges, grapefruits, lemons and limes have well-known anti-cancer benefits and contain lots of antioxidants and phytochemicals. Blueberries and pomegranates contain ellagic acid, a well-known phytochemical with anti-cancer properties.

9. Yogurt
A wonderful article on superfoods states the following: “Scientists have found that the active culture of bacteria in yogurt, which is called lactobacillus, actually helps to fortify the immune system.” Plus, yogurt is a good source of calcium that may also be cancer preventive.

10. More Omega-3 Fish & Less Red Meat and Fried Foods
Eating more vegetarian meals (vegetables and fruits) and less fat is just so cancer preventive! However, omega-3 fats have been shown to have anti-cancer benefits. Vegetable oils and animal fat tend to promote cancer, whereas fish oils and olive oils have anti-cancer effects. Additionally, the American Cancer Society suggests limiting red meat and processed meats, and eating five fruits or vegetables a day.

Vital nutrients may actually improve our quality of life, and help us live longer and healthier lives. What more could we possible hope for?

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, “The likelihood of developing Alzheimer’s doubles about every five years after age 65. After age 85, the risk reaches nearly 50 percent.”1

As quoted by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, “Experts believe that up to 4 million people in the United States are currently living with the disease: one in ten people over the age of 65 and nearly half of those over 85 have AD.”2

One way of diagnosing Alzheimer’s is to take a look at the brain to see if tangles or plaques are present. These are much like brain debris or broken down pieces of the nerve cells.3 This is how they know if you have Alzheimer’s.

#1: Antioxidants

Antioxidants are the number-one nutrient to help protect the brain and its fats from being stripped away. The first step in maintaining brain health starts with antioxidants, which neutralize free radicals. In fact, some experts recommend taking vitamins C and E, two antioxidants, along with the brain-protective omega-3 fatty acid DHA.

         What are the best antioxidants?

Açai berry – This Brazilian fruit contains some of the most potent antioxidants and may be more effective than other antioxidants. This berry neutralizes specific types of free radicals (superoxide) better than any other fruit or vegetable. As reported by the Journal of Agriculture, “The SOD of açai was 1614 units/g, an extremely high scavenging capacity for O2, by far the highest of any fruit or vegetable tested to date.”4

Vitamins A, C and E are popular antioxidants.

A medical report detailing current treatment options for dementia mentions popular antioxidants as possible treatments for preventing Alzheimer’s such as green tea, curcumin and trans-resveratrol, a type of antioxidant known as a polyphenol that is found naturally in grapes and red wine.5

Resveratrol, green tea catechins and curcumin all have potential as “protective factors” for several diseases of aging, including Alzheimer’s disease.5

#2: Omega-3, Fish Oils and DHA

DHA is one nutrient that may be the most important supplement for the aging population. As we age, supplementing the diet with extra DHA—an active ingredient found in fish oils—and other omega-3 fatty acids may be important to prevent nutritional deficiencies and keep the brain in good working order.

People who have cognitive impairment that is common to aging have lower levels of both total omega-3 and DHA than those who have normal cognitive function.6 This nutritional deficiency is observed not only in Alzheimer’s disease but also extends to other forms of dementia and cognitive decline in general.6

DHA maintains the structure and function of brain cells.7

#3: Vitamins

The notion that vitamins are good for the brain and that vitamin deficiencies are associated with disease has been around for a long time.

Did you know that homocysteine levels not kept in check are now associated not only with heart disease, but also with cognitive decline? As published by the Public Library of Science, “Homocysteine is a risk factor for brain atrophy, cognitive impairment and dementia. Plasma concentrations of homocysteine can be lowered by dietary administration of B vitamins.”8

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, “Doctors sometimes prescribe vitamin E to treat cognitive Alzheimer’s symptoms. Vitamin E is an antioxidant, a substance that may protect brain cells and other body tissues from certain kinds of chemical wear and tear.”1

#4 Curcumin

Add some spice to your food and live longer? As mentioned above, curcumin has been studied as a possible treatment for Alzheimer’s patients. This spice has multiple benefits for the brain, with much research and popularity behind it.

It has multiple health benefits and “is the source of the spice turmeric that is found in curries and other spicy dishes from India, Asia and the Middle East.”9

As referenced in the Annals of Indian Academy of Neurology, “Similar to many other herbal remedies, people first used curcumin as a food and later discovered that it also had impressive medicinal qualities.”9

#5 Walking and other forms of exercise

Although good nutrition is key for a healthy brain, exercise is equally important. Walking, running, exercising and keeping the mind engaged and busy has enormous benefits. According to the Los Angeles Times, “The more people moved, the higher their brain volume, a marker for brain health. That link held after adjusting for factors such as age, gender, body mass index and education. People who met the requirements for activity also scored better on a mental exam.”10 Your brain, after all, acts like a muscle and needs stimulation and exercise to stay strong and healthy.

I’ve never done one before, let alone run a 5K. But I have picked up some amazing tips during my training on how to increase endurance and optimize performance.

1. Eat well and hydrate often: Dr. Jack Manzella, clinical education director for the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and Res-Q’s medical advisor, writes, “Adequate hydration on a daily basis is essential. One of the biggest mistakes I made early on in my [marathon] training was to only hydrate before exercising. Our bodies (especially the kidneys) require time to adjust to increase fluid intake. The more adequately hydrated the body is on a cellular level, the better the body’s ability to endure.” And that goes for proper nutrition as well. Eating natural, raw foods like fruits and vegetables, which are packed with enzymes and antioxidants, strengthens your body as opposed to weakening it. Processed foods (cakes, cookies, potato chips, even some energy bars, etc.) make the body work extra hard to a) figure out what the heck it’s digesting, and b) digest it. The digestive tract is not built to digest such “fake” foods, so over time, this taxes the digestive system and ultimately the whole body. The healthier you eat, the more your system is capable of performing at its best.

Don’t exercise every day: You don’t want to knock yourself out with strenuous cardiovascular activity for hours every day. In fact, over-exercising is not safe or productive. It’s dangerous. Top athletes realize this and train smart, in intervals. A healthy balance is best. For example, Dr. Jack recommends weight training as well as interval training: “Nothing burns calories longer than higher levels of muscle tone. Most exercise literature focuses on core strength trainingwith a heavy emphasis on weight lifting. Couple this with much more short bursts of high-intensity activities such as wind sprints, plyometrics, jumps, etc., and your ability to endure for longer and stronger periods of time will increase.”

Take vitamins: Some supplements that claim to “enhance energy” or “boost performance” are pure garbage. They are usually stimulant-based caffeine pills that will not only cause a crash after a few hours, but are simply bad for your body. Raw, antioxidant-rich natural foods are best. But I also believe in the power of a good vitamin, which can give you all essential vitamins and minerals and improve overall performance. Also, there now exist all-natural supplements that increase energy on a cellular level, as opposed to via the nervous system. Jennifer Lynn, Res-Q’s chief research consultant, writes, “Res-Q Orosine may help transfer oxygen from the blood to the heart. Additionally, it also helps to protect the heart when under stress, such as when it is being overworked from strenuous exercise or even high blood pressure.” Products like Res-Q Orosine, which are used by heart patients and athletes alike, can be a huge benefit to your body’s overall ability to perform.

Get a good night’s sleep: According to Dr. Jack, “Most high-performance endurance athletes schedule rest times as well as adequate sleep time. Without adequate time to allow for repair and rebuilding of the muscle tissue, the body may weaken and recurrently underperform. This leads to illness and injury.” So make sure you take rest and relaxation as seriously as you do your high-energy performance. In the end, you will see a difference.

Know your limits: One of the main causes of injury during training or exercising is overdoing it. Listen to your body. If you are dizzy or feel too uncomfortable (a little discomfort is necessary, but too much discomfort or pain means something is wrong), you need to stop and reassess what you’re doing. If you don’t yet know your limits (i.e., if unsure how hard you’re working) get a heart-rate monitor, which records your heart’s beats per minute and allows you to stay in a healthy aerobic zone or push your limits in an “anaerobic threshold” zone. For example, I’m 40 and weigh 122 at 5’3”. I am also fairly athletic. The heart-rate monitor calculates this information and determines that my aerobic zone, which is about 70% to 80% of my individual maximum heart rate, is about 165. That means when my heart rate reaches 165 (beats per minute) I am working out safely. If I go above that, I know to slow down if I do not want to knock myself out. If, however, I want to test my limits, the heart-rate monitor can tell me when I’ve hit my “redline” zone, which I hit for only a few minutes and then try to slow it down. Redline zones are to be approached with caution and you should not be working in this zone for a long period of time. For more information on heart-rate monitor training, check out Sally Edwards’ The Heart Rate Monitor Guidebook.

Antioxidants may help maintain brain health and help prevent mild memory loss associated with the natural process of aging. In fact, potent antioxidants and omega-3’s are important natural components of the diet that help maintain brain health throughout the lifespan.

Overproduction of free radicals can cause damage to the brain. For example, when imbalances occur between free radicals and the body’s ability to neutralize them, good health can be in danger! Environmental factors such as pollution and smoke, play a role in creating imbalance. Furthermore, the typical unhealthy foods in today’s diet may not be providing us with the beneficial antioxidants that nature intended.

Excess free radicals can lead to the progression of Alzheimer’s disease, which affects memory. Free radicals can attack the brain cells which lead to the degeneration of the brain. Since antioxidants neutralize free radicals, the health benefits of antioxidants should not be underestimated.

Antioxidants also help to protect the fats in the brain. The majority of the brain is comprised of fats and the brain is particularly susceptible to oxidative damage resulting from imbalance. Antioxidants help provide balance by preventing lipid peroxidation, the process whereby free radicals steal electrons from the lipids in our cell membranes, causing damage to the brain cell.

Res-Q Antioxidant Supplements:

Res-Q Mega Acai is a new Res-Q supplement that contains a unique combination of multiple, powerful antioxidants with the superior ability to neutralize free radicals. Res-Q Mega Acai is intended to supplement the diet by helping to ensure the provision of potent and powerful antioxidants that maintain good health during aging. Res-Q Mega Acai is specifically formulated to fight multiple types of free radicals. This provides greater health benefits for the brain.

Combining different types of antioxidants provides greater health benefits. According to the medical journal Neuroreport, “The combination of resveratrol and vitamin C and/or E was more effective in protecting the cell than was any of these three antioxidants alone.” Therefore, Res-Q Mega Acai may be used along with Res-Q CellPower, our antioxidant blend containing the fat-soluble form of Vitamin C, and Res-Q Resveratrol, an extract of red grape skin with unique anti-aging benefits. Combining different types of antioxidants provides better protection against free radicals. Using these products in conjunction provides better protection against multiple types of free radicals for enhanced brain health benefits.

The superior antioxidant activity generated from the combination of green tea, pomegranate and Acai berry extracts is what makes Res-Q Mega Acai the best antioxidant supplement available today. Res-Q Mega Acai contains ingredients with superior free-radical scavenging ability as identified by multiple tests. The ingredients in Res-Q Mega Acai have been shown in studies to have antioxidant activity on specific types of free radicals superior to any other. For example, Acai berry fruit extract scored the highest of any fruit or vegetable to date for its ability to effectively neutralize superoxide, a type of free radical.

2. Res-Q Mega Acai contains Acai berry which scores very high on the ORAC rating. A high ORAC rating is a desirable feature of any antioxidant supplement. Res-Q Mega Acai contains ingredients that are very potent, very effective, and very powerful antioxidants as indicated by numerous clinical research tests and assays.

3. Attacking multiple kinds of free radicals provides the best results and better health benefits for the entire body. Res-Q Mega Acai contains a unique combination of multiple, powerful antioxidants designed to fight different types of free radicals. The entire body is made up of cells which need proper nutrients such as antioxidants for optimal balance. In excess, free radicals can lead to harm to the cells which can in turn lead to disease. It is better to keep the focus on improving prevention and promoting good health than to wait until it is too late. Res-Q Mega Acai is a superior antioxidant supplement providing potent and powerful antioxidants to provide better results. Since antioxidants help keep us healthy, why not take the best antioxidants?

4. Cholesterol can become oxidized and become harmful to the arteries. Antioxidants work to neutralize the effects of oxidation thus promoting cardiovascular health or blood vessel health by decreasing inflammation.

5. The extracts in Res-Q Mega Acai provide all the antioxidant benefits of fruit juice yet without the calories, carbohydrates and increased cost. Excess sugar is unhealthy and may lead to weight gain. Res-Q Mega Acai is an antioxidant supplement that you can afford. Our daily diet is not always as nutritious as it should be. You can’t afford not to take Res-Q Mega Acai. Take Res-Q Mega Acai daily just to ensure that you always receive enough potent antioxidants every single day of your life!

6. Res-Q Mega Acai is well absorbed, exceptionally stable and vegan friendly. The Res-Q Mega Acai caplet is well constructed to ensure bioavailability and is made from natural minerals and purified vegetable fibers. The disintegration time of the Res-Q caplets meet high quality standards for the manufacturing of supplements. The vegetable fibers swell in water producing a gel which helps control the release of nutrients from the tablets. This beneficial action promotes absorption of the active ingredients. We also include vegetable fibers to provide a thin layer of coating on the caplet in order to protect the active ingredients from the effects of moisture, light and the acidic environment of the stomach. This ensures a stable shelf life and promotes absorption.

COMPLETE HEALTH

Res-Q Mega Acai helps maintain the health of the brain, blood vessels, and the entire body by providing superior antioxidants which act as scavengers for free radicals. Excess amounts of free radicals can cause imbalance and trigger a chain-reaction process which can lead to cellular damage, disease and consequently a shorter life span. The entire body is made up of cells and these cells need antioxidants for optimal balance.

Res-Q Mega Acai contains Acai berry, pomegranate fruit, and green tea extracts, potent ingredients rich in antioxidants. Antioxidants are an important part of any good health regimen encouraging health on a cellular level.
HEART HEALTH

Antioxidants promote blood vessel health and are important for complete cardiovascular care. Having healthy arteries is about more than just watching the amount of cholesterol that is in the bloodstream. Oxidized LDL cholesterol can harm arteries by forming plaque build-up in the artery wall. Antioxidants promote healthy arteries by working to help protect the cholesterol from oxidation. Therefore, antioxidant supplements should be an important part of any cholesterol-lowering program.

COMMON INFLAMMATION

Excess inflammation is now associated with many health problems and may even play a role in the progression of Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. Although inflammation is a normal immune response to something that has gone wrong in the body, its everlasting effects, although originally well-intended, can actually cause further progression of the precise health problems that we seek to treat!

The ingredients in Res-Q Mega Acai help counteract excess inflammation that is common to everyone. Take Res-Q Mega Acai in conjunction with Res-Q 1250, our primary product designed to help counteract inflammation. Res-Q Mega Acai is a dietary supplement intended to maintain good health.

BRAIN HEALTH

Excess free radicals can harm the brain cells. Help protect the brain cells by providing your brain with the potent and effective antioxidants found in Res-Q Mega Acai. Res-Q Mega Acai’s unique combination of multiple, powerful, antioxidants, fight different types of free radicals. Res-Q Mega Acai contains Acai berry. Acai berry scored higher than other fruits and vegetables on the ORAC test, a test that measures the ability of the antioxidant to neutralize free radicals. Foods that score higher on the ORAC scale will more effectively eliminate free radicals.

IMMUNE SYSTEM HEALTH

Antioxidants help maintain immune system health by defending immune cells from assault by free radicals. This action helps maintain the number of immune cells which are vital to the health and function of the immune system.

USE WITH OTHER ANTIOXIDANTS:

Res-Q Mega Acai provides general health benefits by providing very potent and powerful antioxidants found in Acai berry, pomegranate, and green tea. Res-Q Mega Acai is not intended to replace your regular supplements or medications.

Since using a variety of antioxidants provides better health, Res-Q Mega Acai may be used with Res-Q CellPower.
The entire body is made up of cells and these cells need antioxidants for optimal balance. Excess amounts of free radicals can harm cells. Neutralizing multiple types of free radicals promotes better cell health and arterial health.

The antioxidants in green tea promote good health by neutralizing free radicals. Green tea is very effective at neutralizing hydroxyl radicals, harmful free radicals. Green tea binds with hydroxyl radicals thus neutralizing them. Green tea also helps inhibit the formation of free radicals.

The leaves of green tea contain beneficial active constituents called polyphenols, phytochemicals with antioxidant benefits. Phytochemicals are beneficial compounds present in plants, vegetables and fruits. One of the most well-known active constituents in green tea is EGCG, also called epigallocatechin-3-gallate, a polyphenol present in green tea leaves.

Green tea is produced by steaming the fresh leaves of the plant Camellia sinensis, an evergreen shrub with dark green leaves and white flowers. This process inactivates oxidizing enzymes and leaves the polyphenol content intact. Since black tea is produced by oxidizing the young tea leaves, it does not have the exact same active constituents or health benefits as green tea.

Furthermore, green tea has detoxification properties that promote good health and well-being. Green tea has antioxidant, anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties. Green tea may also encourage good intestinal flora.
