May is Stroke Awareness Month

Every year, 795,000 Americans have a stroke and 144,000 die.1 A stroke happens when an artery is blocked or breaks; as a result, the brain does not get the blood that it needs and begins to die.2 Sounds gruesome, but the more you educate yourself about diet and exercise, the more chance you have of preventing a stroke.

Firstly, maintaining healthy cholesterol levels is one of the recommendations of the National Stroke Association. There is a connection between cholesterol levels and blocked arteries. Anti-clotting medications keep the blood flowing,3 but they do not treat the cause of the problem: blocked arteries. Here are the recommended healthy cholesterol levels:

  • a total cholesterol under 200;
  • a good cholesterol (HDL) of 60 or more; and 
  • a bad cholesterol (LDL) no higher than 130 (an LDL equal to or less than 100 is considered optimal).   (more…)

When I was a teenager I probably spent more than half my day sleeping or lying on the sofa napping. Most teens and young adults are like that. Babies, too, of course. They need huge doses of rest and relaxation (between bouts of physical energy and exertion) due to their bodies working overtime to develop and grow. But what about adults? One way to help keep the heart healthy is to get enough sleep.According to a new study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, Not getting enough sleep can raise your blood pressure. As reported on MSNBC, “The study, among the first to directly measure sleep duration in middle-aged adults, found missing an average one hour of sleep over five years raised the risk of developing high blood pressure by 37 percent.” (more…)
