…and why a holistic health practitioner should be one of them
A while back, I was under an enormous amount of stress and feeling filled with anxiety, which was undoubtedly causing physical back pains and headaches. I communicated this to my doctor and told her that I wish I could just control the thoughts in my brain and stop worrying so much! A seemingly impossible problem to treat. Almost immediately, she suggested an anti-anxiety drug. No inquiry into the foods I may have been eating, no mention of exercise, not even, “How much coffee or caffeinated beverages have you been drinking lately?” Just, “There’s a great new anti-anxiety medication on the market with your name on it.”
I quickly blurted out that I don’t like drugs. I don’t even take aspirin if I can help it.
She looked at me like I was un-patriotic. Drugs are as American as apple pie. It was then that I realized how radical I must have seemed to her when I asked, “Surely there’s another approach?” (more…)

I was poised and ready to write a cutesy little blog this morning on how to combat “the blues.” I was going to make suggestions like get out of bed, get a hobby, exercise, eat right, meet new people. And then it hit me like a train. If you’re depressed you can’t do any of those things. Duh.
So…this instead:
Last Friday, on my way to work, I was listening to NPR. The program on Radio Times was called Emerging Treatments in Depression based on the work of Dr. John O’Reardon, Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania and Director of the Treatment-Resistant Depression Clinic. As published by the Point Institute, “It is often thought that EPA and DHA have identical benefits in preventing cardiovascular risk, and since commercial products often have higher EPA concentrations, many believe EPA must be of greater benefit.” On the other hand, some people feel that DHA is the better of the two omega-3 fatty acids. DHA is very effective at reducing heart rate and blood pressure, and increasing the LDL particle size (a larger particle size is better for the arteries). Since the 1980s, clinical trials comparing EPA and DHA have emerged. Some studies favored EPA while others favored DHA. Let’s find out what they have in common: (more…)

A wise author and activist once said, “Action may not always bring happiness, but there is no happiness without action.” That may be hard to believe when your whole world has been turned upside down. But as the quote suggests, happiness takes effort. And sometimes, a lot! Not only that, but it’s essential to good health and longer life.
So, this week we’re doing a little of the work for you, by offering up four sites that just might help you regain some of your inner sunshine. (more…)

As if people who suffer from depression don’t have enough to worry about, here’s something else: According to researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, “A history of major depression increases the risk of heart disease over and above any genetic risks common to depression and heart disease.” Among an assortment of ailments (physical, mental and otherwise) that depression causes, we now know that heart disease is one of them. That’s depressing!
But most of us don’t start out with serious, long-term depression. Sometimes life events bring on bouts of sadness, or what’s called “situational depression,” which occurs when one experiences the death of a loved one, a financial crisis, a traumatic event and so on. If temporary bouts of sadness are not addressed, they may become acute. And while I don’t claim to be a psychologist or professional therapist, I have dealt with both long- and short-term periods of depression. More importantly, I have learned ways of avoiding long-term depression and dealing head-on with sadness and shorter bouts of the blues. What’s worked for me will hopefully work for you. However, depression is no joke. If you have been suffering from depression for longer than three to six months, talk to your doctor today. He or she can help! Otherwise, here are ten life-changing tips that can transform your mental and emotional well-being. (more…)

Res-Q 1250, our high-po
tency omega-3 supplement, helps maintain a healthy mood.
The increased prevalence of mental illness and the surge of new medications may indicate a greater need for prevention and the need to focus on the health of the brain.
EPA Study
Patients diagnosed with major depression disorder were given the fatty acid EPA, medication, or EPA plus medication for 8 weeks. The combination of treatment with the omega-3 fatty acid EPA plus the medication was “significantly better” than either treatment alone. In conclusion, omega-3 supplements containing EPA are beneficial to the health of the brain. Furthermore, the fatty acid EPA is as important as DHA for complete mental health. (more…)

Many mothers are deficient in DHA throughout their pregnancy which translates to DHA deficiency in their children at birth, thus they may benefit from DHA supplementation.
We recommend that nursing mothers and pregnant women discuss the dosage of omega-3 with their physician.
Supplementation is most beneficial in the early stages of pregnancy. Even if you are thinking about becoming pregnant, it is a good idea to supplement.
