More About Melatonin…

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

Double-blind placebo controlled study.

According to a study published in The Journal of Sleep Research, melatonin users felt more refreshed in the morning, and fell asleep faster than non-melatonin users. The relevance of using melatonin in this study is that melatonin is the key chemical responsible for our sleep cycle.

The study was conducted on patients with “Delayed sleep phase syndrome.” Delayed sleep phase syndrome is a sleep disturbance of the circadian rhythm. Valerian, a natural herb, is commonly used. Valerian is commonly used today, and in the past.
Valerian has a long history of use in the natural community. Valerian was used in ancient Greece, and was in use during the second century to help promote sleep. According to the 2002 Alternative Health/Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) Supplement to the National Health Interview Survey published by the journal Sleep, “Large segments of the United States population used valerian or melatonin…” Almost 30% of the people taking valerian were using valerian for sleep.
