Tips for Safe Exercise at Ages 40, 50 and 60+

Lady SwimmingWhen I turned 40, I started to notice a change in my ability to perform certain cardio exercises (running or biking, for example). Because I use a heart-rate monitor, it was easier to see that my safe zone had decreased from several years prior. Where once a heart rate of 180 felt comfortable, I soon learned that 170 was my new maximum. I also found out that I tire more quickly and that it takes me longer to warm up. 

As unpleasant as getting older may seem, I think it’s important to respect your age and relearn your limitations. That’s not to say you have to walk instead of run! But it is to say that you need to be mindful of how to exercise safely for your age. So, here are a few tips for your age bracket:  (more…)

Better Digestion

Until recently, digestion has been poorly underrated. With all the focus on heart and lung health and cures for cancer, so many of us forget—or more importantly, don’t even realize—how vital is healthy digestion. We tend to think that heartburn, diarrhea or constipation just goes with the territory of being human, and a quick solution is to pop a Rolaids or take a laxative. This is dangerous and mindless thinking. For starters, if experiencing these problems daily you’re doing something wrong. Not only that, but you are laying a heavy burden on your digestive system. And the more we know, the more we realize that it is an intrinsic part of our bodies. If we treat one system poorly, it affects all systems. We are holistic beings and need to respect every aspect of who we are and how we function. (more…)

How Changing your Lifestyle can Change your Life

Res-Q Consultants offer their stories on how small changes had big consequences.

My mother always used to say, “When you’re sick and tired of being sick and tired, you’ll do something about it [insert difficult situation here]. You’ll change.” And she was right. All of my greatest moments of self-motivation came when I was sick and tired of being sick and tired. The day I quit smoking came from lying flat on my back with bronchitis for two weeks straight. The day I decided to join a gym and lose weight came after giving birth and dealing with postpartum depression. And yet, little changes in lifestyle (adding more fruits and veggies to the diet, walking upstairs instead of taking the elevator) still have the power to transform a life.
